Angels Among Us!

 

 

O my lord, what are these? And the angel that talked with me said unto me, I will show thee ... these are they whom the Lord has sent to walk throughout the earth. We have walked to and fro through the earth, and behold, all the earth sits still, and is at rest.    (Zechariah 1:9-11)

 

The angel of the Lord descended from heaven, and came and rolled back the stone from the door, and sat upon it. His face was like lightning and his raiment white as snow. The keepers shook out of fear, and became as dead men. The angel answered and said unto the women, fear not, for I know that you seek Jesus, which was crucified.    (Matthew 28:2-5)

The Bible mentions three angels by name

 Gabriel

A messenger angel who appeared to both the Virgin Mary and to Muhammad, Gabriel is the angel of annunciation, heavenly mercy, resurrection, and revelation. It is Gabriel who will blow the horn announcing the second coming of Christ. In Islamic traditions, Gabriel is the angel of humanity, the spirit of truth. his symbol is the lily.

 

Michael.

Chief among the angel-princes, Michael is sometimes a worrior-angel, appearing as such in the Old testament books of Enoch and Daniel. In Revelations, it is Michael who leads an army of God's angels against satan, He is an angel of repentance, mercy and righteousness, appearing in Islamic , Jewish , and Christian "angelology". He is often depicted with a sword.

Raphael

An archangel and chief among the guardian angels, Raphael has special charge of protecting the young and, the innocent, and travelers. He is the angel of prayer, love, joy, light, providence and healing. He is often shown carrying a pilgrims staff.

 

Thousand thousands ministered unto him, and ten thousand times ten thousand stood before him: the judgment was set, and the books were opened.    (Daniel 7:10

Thinkest thou that I cannot now pray to my Father, and he shall presently give me more than twelve legions of angels?    (Matthew 26:53)

Neither can they die any more, for they are equal to the angels, and are the children of God, being the children of the resurrection.    (Luke 20:36)

And while they looked steadfastly toward heaven as He went up, behold two men stood by them in white apparel.    (Acts 1:10)

But of that day and hour no man knows, no, not the angels of heaven, but my Father only.    (Matthew 24:36)

Bless the Lord, ye his angels, that excel in strength, that do his commandments, hearkening unto the voice of his word.    (Psalms 103:20)

1. What does ‘Angel' mean?
- The Bible was written in Hebrew (Old Testament) and Greek (New Testament) Both use the words 'angel' and it means messenger. It also means an ambassador of human affairs, that is speaks in the place of one who has sent him.

3. Are their categories of angels?

4. What is an archangel?
- 'Archangel' is only found in the New Testament at 1 Thess.4:16 and Jude 9. The idea is also seen in Rev. 8:2 and 7f, 8:10-12; Rev 9:1 and 13; Rev 11:15. Considered to be a postiion of authority among angels.(Outside of the Bible some writings before and around the time of Jesus believed that Gabriel was at teh left hand of God- However, THIS IS NOT taught in Scripture - but said to give you insight to beliefs at teh time of Jesus)

7. What does the Bible say about the Archangel Michael?
- Michael means possibly "Who is like God "In the Book of Daniel he had special responsibilities as the champion of Israel against the rival angel of the Persians (Daniel 10:13,20) and he leads the heavenly armies against all supernatural forces of evil in the last battle (Daniel 12:1)
- In the New Testament he mentions in Jude 9 and Rev.12:7 where we are taught that Michael disputed with the devil over the body of Moses. In Rev 12:7 the theme of Dan 12:1 is taken up, presenting Michael as the vanquisher of the Dragon, (Satan)

8. What does the Bible teach about Gabriel?
- Gabriel may mean man of God or God is strong.
- In the OT he is a heavenly messenger who appears to Daniel as a man (Dan.8:16; 9:21)
- His function is to reveal the future by interpreting the vision Dan 8:17
- He is to give understanding and wisdom to Daniel Dan. 9:22
- Gabriel appears at the birth of John ( Luke 1:11-20) and Jesus (Luke 1:26-38) as an angelic messenger.
- He is one who came from the immediate presence of God to reassure Mary (Luke 1:30)
